INTERIOR DESIGN

COASTAL COTTAGE GUESTROOM

July 29, 2015

Creating a fresh design for this guest room, for a young couple who purchased a beach cottage on The Cape, was the perfect project to get my feet wet back into interior styling. The clients and I decided upon a vintage Hamptons feel, with a hint of grandma chic, and a heavy focus on pops of color inspired by the Atlantic.

We first decided to keep the raw-stained woodwork throughout the room, selecting a vintage piece for the dresser, with clean lines and a bit of a shaker feel. Then we focused in on the paint selections, I naturally go with Benjamin Moore as my first choice, once we put a sample of ‘White Heron‘ OC-57 on the wall, the couple was instantly pleased. This color selection for the walls gave the small, narrow room a chance to expand the mind. With the steep roof eaves, you had the sensation you were on a boat (the west facing view into the bay also majorly played a role.)

Now onto the bedding selection and interior decorating details. I went for a light and bright, Valspar enamel spray in ‘Satin Encounter’ to give the existing 1940’s metal twin beds, a fresh and contemporary look. We found vintage style bedding at a local boutique and repurposed a pair of hunting lithographs from the house. The budget was tight and I worked my best to achieve a welcoming guest room, for their coming friends and family. The outcome was a happy summer home and a new start for an outdated cape cottage.
